Granite, white birch trunks and brilliant red maple leaves compete for attention just east of Noyes Pond.
Seyon Lodge is about a hundred yards behind and to the right of where I took this photograph. Formerly owned by the Noyes family, it is now run by the state of Vermont's Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. It's the very definition of rustic Vermont beauty, with a stone fireplace and room for 16 overnight guests, who can enjoy the pristine beauty of Groton State Forest and Noyes Pond -- hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing and more -- while staying in comfortable accommodations. And to top it all off, it's inexpensive -- under $100 a night as I write this. I plan to bring my wife for a weekend here as soon as we can find a time to get away...
