Yellowstone Lake is shaped somewhat like a hand; on the west side there is a rounded bay that has, naturally come to be known as West Thumb. On the shoreline here is one of the most interesting geyser basins in the park, where geothermal features lie directly adjacent to the lake and interact with its cool waters.
This view shows some of the steaming hot springs and pools in the crisp morning air, with Yellowstone Lake in the background, and behind it, mountains in the distance.
