As mentioned in an earlier image description, travertine is a rather fragile material compared to the geyserite that makes up most of Yellowstone's geysers and other thermal features. Once a spring dries up, the travertine may crumble over time.

This is one of many reasons why it is so important that unique places like Mammoth Hot Springs be protected so that future generations can enjoy them.
